The new terminal prioritises the passenger experience, facilitating a streamlined service from door to destination. Global travellers can now experience this state-of-the art new terminal. A gateway to Abu Dhabi, and the world, over 30 international airlines operates from the terminal. As the first terminal in the world to incorporate all nine biometric airport touch points, it uses a range of biometric solutions to deliver a quick and efficient journey.
The new terminal has been designed with an X-shape to improve operational efficiency and passenger flow. It features four themed piers inspired by Abu Dhabi’s desert, sea, city, and oasis landscapes. The new terminal drastically reduces water consumption by 45%, whilst 7,500 solar panels power a 3MW plant that saves 5,300 tons of carbon dioxide annually. It has also been fitted with Advanced Surface Movement Control System, the first of its kind in the Middle East, to allow planes to land quickly and safely during low-visibility weather conditions.
Across Zayed International Airport, Abu Dhabi Airports has implemented several initiatives that combine great design and technology to ensure all passengers experience world-class levels of service and comfort whilst visiting the capital’s airport.
The ‘Smart Travel’ system at AUH involves 5-steps:
These processes have enhanced the passenger experience by decreasing processing times at the airport by 70%, meaning less time in queues and more time for travellers to enjoy the airport’s retail, leisure and food & beverage facilities.
The US pre-clearance facility was opened at AUH in early 2014 and won an Abu Dhabi Award for Excellence in Government Performance in the Projects Category. The facility is the first of its kind in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, and one of the few worldwide.
The pre-clearance facility allows passengers travelling to the US to complete US immigration, customs and security clearances before arriving there. Passengers travelling to such destinations as New York, Washington, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles on flights operated by Etihad Airways, can take advantage of this unique service and avoid lengthy queues upon arrival in America.
Located in Zayed International Airport, the breathtaking Sana Al Noor stands at 22 metres tall and is one of the largest public environmental art features in the Middle East. Situated between Arrivals and Departures, it contains 1,632 individuals curved ‘leaves’ of glass and its traditional burjeel design directs air and light between the departures and arrivals levels, improving daylighting and saving energy through naural ventilation techniques.
Established in 1984, Abu Dhabi Duty Free (ADDF) is responsible for managing all retail, F&B and service operations within our facilities, reaching millions of passengers who arrive, depart or transit through our airports every year.
