As we continue investing in infrastructure to accommodate rapidly increasing passenger numbers annually, our sustainability commitment has never been stronger. Designed using advanced environmentally friendly practices, the MTB nearing completion at AUH is a working example of this dedication

International team of experts

To develop and deliver the MTB, we have brought together specialists who have played critical roles in the development of some of the world’s most important airport expansions, including Chicago, Singapore’s Changi Airport and London Heathrow’s Terminal 5.

Rated and accredited

In 2011, Abu Dhabi International Airport became the first Carbon Accredited airport in Asia-Pacific from ACI Europe and ACI Asia-Pacific.

Taking into account the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council’s (UPC) Estidama approach towards ecological design, a UPC and Abu Dhabi Airports collaboration has led to the MTB’s recent 3 Pearl Design Rating award from the Estidama Pearl Building Rating System (PBRS). The MTB is now the highest rated airport terminal in the GCC, and the largest singular building ever to be rated globally.

Energy consumption

The MTB was designed to achieve a considerable reduction in annual energy consumption through the specification of an appropriate and climate responsive building form and façade and systems, which will feature:

  • High performance low-e double glazing to reduce solar gain
  • Low U-values specified for the walls and roof to minimize heat gain

Substantial energy demand reductions will also be achieved through the use of:

  • A highly efficient lighting system
  • An adaptive and effectively controlled HVAC system

A sophisticated Building Management System and an Advanced Energy Measurement and Targeting System will also be in place to allow the energy performance of the building to be recorded and monitored, giving us a clear understanding of our energy use, thereby enabling improvements.

To reduce energy consumption, even during times of growth, we follow an energy and carbon strategy that involves a series of measures to monitor and reduce our airports’ energy consumption levels.

Construction materials

During construction phase, we are committed to:

  • Diverting a minimum of 75% of construction waste from landfills
  • Using recycled materials where practical
  • Selecting regional materials to reduce the demand for fossil fuels for transportation purposes

Water usage

One of our priorities in the MTB design was to limit the use of potable water.

  • Water demand was specifically studied and water fixtures were selected based on their ability to maximize reductions
  • Water conservation campaigns to alert all Abu Dhabi Airports’ employees to best practices are ongoing

The MTB can achieve and maintain a reduction in water consumption of 45% over a comparative baseline case.

Waste management

We have programmes in place to manage and reduce waste including a company-wide recycling awareness campaign. By 2015, we aim to recycle 45% of all the waste we generate.

Gas emissions

To manage harmful greenhouse gas emissions, we have implemented carbon and energy management strategies and policies that have been in place since 2011.
